Who says sunglasses are only for summer?

Wearing a good pair of sunnies matters just as much (if not more) during the winter months, especially if you’re lucky enough to be galavanting off on a winter holiday.

Whether you’re going on a frosty but sunny city break with the girlfriend, or hitting up the snow-topped mountains for a sporty ski trip, you’ll need to get good, well-made winter sunnies that will add both style and practicality to your holiday look. After all, if you’re making the most of your holiday, chances are you’ll have tired eyes to hide in the mornings…what better way to do it than with some next level specs? Bundling up for winter with a hat, scarf, coat and wooly socks just isn’t complete without that final touch.

So, here are some steps you can follow to make sure you get the ultimate sunglasses for your winter holiday this year.

Get coloured “mirror” lenses

There’s no better season to go for mirrored lenses, as they reflect the light really well in low sun and you can usually choose between various bright colours. Mirrored lenses have a certain wintery vibe to them, especially if you go for a bright blue or silver colour (fashionably frosty!).

In case you didn’t know, mirrored sunglasses have a reflective optical coating on the outside of the lenses to make them appear like small mirrors. The lenses typically give the wearer’s vision a brown or grey tint and they look particularly good on a bright, snowy day.

Vintage vibes

Men’s fashion has gone shamelessly vintage, and winter sunglasses are no exception. Vintage is always flawless in its timelessness – you just have to make sure you get the right glasses to suit your face. For example, it’s not recommended to go for full on vintage circles if your face is also quite round. Instead, go for a more rectangular shape to compliment your natural face shape.

Arlo Wolf has a really useful page for finding out what face shape you have and what type of glasses will look best on you. This matters just as much with sunglasses – especially if you’re on a winter holiday where you’ll want to look good in your photos!

Take winter weather factors into account

Winter might be a great time of year for a bright and frosty trip, but it’s also the season that wreaks the most havoc with your specs. The cold weather can cause steaming up, especially if you are up in the mountains. You might find you clean your sunglasses a lot more in the winter than you do any other time of year for this reason. Metal frames can also get cold and feel uncomfortable on the skin, so watch out for this.

It’s not all bad of course, as winter sunnies will be amazing for protecting you from the winter wind, allowing you to see in brighter conditions, and of course, reflecting UV rays.

Other winter holiday essentials for men

Once you’ve got your perfect winter sunglasses at the ready, it’s time to make sure everything else is in your suitcase ready to go. Don’t forget to pack a cosy bobble hat for those outdoor walks, some decent (warm) footwear, a waterproof jacket if it’s likely to rain, and if you’re heading out of the country, your passport!
