My Two Scents

November 27, 2007
I’ve been itching to do a fragrance post for a while but I’ve put it off due to my serious lack of experience regarding this particular topic. I’m permanently on a budget and it’s not often I can justify the extravagance of bottle so I’m not exactly knowledgeable.

However, I do have in my possession two trusties that see me through the vast majority of the time…

Pi Fraiche by Givenchy

Basenotes says: ‘Fresher’ than original Pi, with top notes of tangerine and jasmine, middle notes of amber and base notes of benzoin and woody notes.

I say: Light and fruity but-surprisingly-should be used sparingly, the fun is quite spoiled once you’ve spritzed on so much you actually smell like a sugar-coated tangerine. Great for Summer, and a nifty bottle to boot.

Higher Energy by Dior

Dior Spokesperson says: ‘more dynamic, electric and younger’ than the original, Higher.

I say: Citrusy, musky and spicy all at once. This is decadent but not overly lavish, an evening scent through and through.

These are great scents for you, DCB. I’d also suggest Armani pour Homme and Dior Eau Sauvage (these are both kind of lemon chypres and as such have an electricity and energy to them). Also, why not fill out the Frederic Malle questionnaire. They do send generous samples of their very exclusive frags:http://www.editionsdeparfums.com/mallesite_gb/index.htmBTW, I linked to you.

suzanna: I’ve tried Eau Savage a great many times, loved it and never bought it! Lunacy indeed! It’s in my christmas wishlist though. I’ve just done the questionnaire, what a fantastic site.I’d love to link you to only I’m afraid I don’t know your blog address!

DCB, the Malle scents are true works of art. When they get back to you, they will suggest a couple for you, so you then write back and say, I’m sorry, I live in a city where they aren’t available, is there any way I could get samples? Then they will send you two 5 ml atomizers with the ones they select. There are quite a few in the line you’d probably like. Let me know how they work out for you!

Good for you, this is awesome. I once read an extensive piece in the New York Times Magazine about new fragrances, and I was so taken with the nuance of the language, the author was full of sensitivity for what s/he was writing about. It’s like great food critics…they have such an elegant hand when they write about fragrances. It escapes me, but I admire it.
