Thursday Miscellany: Running the Gamut from Grenson to Galleries…

So, as much as I nerdily like everything to cohere and despite my tendency to thematise, here’s a random post full of today’s thoughts & happenings I’ve rather hurriedly thrown together. I know it’s not the typical post format here but I’m sure you’ll find it in your heart to forgive me – after all, it is Valentine’s next week…

And, first up, here’s what’s topping my wishlist for Monday; if any of you harbour any semblance of desire for me, can I urge you to please consider pooling your resources and purchasing me a pair? In return I can offer my conditional love/soul/whatever takes your fancy…

These ‘Glenn’ boots are the result of the recent marriage between esteemed English footwear brand Grenson and Dutch denim boutique Tenue de Nîmes.

Inspired by an old infantry boot from around 1890, the style aims to fuse the old (British Millerain canvas) and the new (fine Expresso Cyclone leather) and, as you’ll have noticed, achieves its ambition with aplomb. Considering each pair of this limited run is handmade in England, the price-tag doesn’t seem quite so astronomical at €309,90.

Next up, it’s the eagerly awaited Trinity Arts Festival’s fashion event – “The Way We Wore”. If yesterday’s incoherent mass of rants and raves proved of interest, then you’ll be probably want to know more about this.

Essentially, it’s a vintage and second-hand competition, in which each entrant undertakes to scour Dublin’s array of charity and thrift shops in order to source several items which combine to form an outstanding outfit inspired by one of the following three themes: Colour Shock, Brocade, or Minimalism.

The catch? Each fashion savvy hopeful is limited to a budget of €20 (not including shoes, undergarments and up to one accessory). Seriously glad I’m not actually entering this, but – and rather hilariously – judging instead.

Yes, apparently I have a clue about these things, so I’ll be joining Irish Times Fashion Ed Deirdre McQuillan, prolific photographer Lucy Nuzum, and Chair of our very own TCD Fashion Society, Hannah Little, to decide who’s deserving of the sizeable prize of…

…a €100 voucher from Jenny Vander, South William St., a €50 from Temple Bar’s vintage emporium Eager Beaver, 2 items of clothing from Dean and Edel’s cute second-hand haven 9 Crow St., 1 item from the batty Lucy’s Lounge, and free admission for 2 plus €30 spending money at a Dublin vintage fair.

Come see us deliberate, and the contestants show their wares (not a euphemism), in the magnificent surroundings of Trinity’s Graduate Memorial Building (GMB) today (Thurs Feb 10th) @ 6.30PM.

Finally, it’ll be time to escape the fash madness and appreciate some art and Absolut (really do go hand-in-hand, no?) at Monster Truck in Temple Bar. Funambulism, an exhibition of work from artists’ Laura Green and Elizabeth Tubergen will be launching tonight 6-8PM in association with White Wolf Projects, a sort of – from what I can gather – curation-collaboration between Anne Hendrick, Ciara O’ Hara, Green, and Tubergen.
