Sean Avery: More utilities than meet the eye.

September 3, 2009
Kanye’s rapid insertion of himself into the fashion industry may not have been that surprising (music and fashion always have been bedmates) but when New York Rangers player Sean Avery (a sportsman famed for his boundless agression and belligerent disposition) began a Summer stint at Vogue we knew that fashion had really been shaken up.
But it’s actually not that stunning considering agression and steely determination are two reputed traits of the lauded and revered editirix herself. Also, if there’s one woman capable of a publicity stunt it has to be Nuclear Wintour and permitting Avery, a hockey player, to pace the hallowed halls was sure to cause a stir. However, it appears such a cynical judgement of the magazine’s move may prove incorrect judging from the below…

Following his brief editorial experience Avery signed with NY-based Commonwealth Utilities to act as a design consultant and marketing man. The first fruits of this arrangement (CU’s SS10 collection) are now visible and while I wouldn’t go as far as saying he’s the next Raf Simons, Avery does seem a dab hand when it comes to pushing interesting staples: seersucker short-suits, collegiate v-necks and short-sleeved shirts in shades reminiscent of day spent seaside.

PS. Was contemplating a post of dream sports-player x designer/brand collabs but realised the endeavour would turn out an epic fail considering my verrry limited knowledge of all things athletic. Any ideas?

The collegiate theme is prevalant in menwear, citing Gossip Girl as the visual inspiration for many aspiring fashion followers, there is a temptation to over complicate mens style. Your pictures show clearly the benefits of KISS…..keep is simple stupid, and how picking bright colours creates a unique style for men

Lyndsay: Agreed, this KISS motto of yours makes a lot of sense. Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick/Chuck Bass does look suave in his get-ups but when some people attempt to emulate his dandy-look it can seem forced.Fred: Much thanks./Male-Mode.com
