Trust me to somehow acquire a hankering for AW amid a hot, hot, humid London Summer. It’s not so much the sheets of rain and raging winds I’m getting at, but rather Sjaak Hullekes AW10 collection of muted tones, classic silhouettes and fabrics that don’t so much scream luxe but utter the adjective with assured confidence instead.
And yet, entitled Small Town Boy, it seems at its soft-set heart to be a mix of both boyish vulnerability (the fur jacket, the blazer in dusty pink, the double-breasted jacket in rich coral) and a more masculine spirit (sharp, classic lines, the beige zippered sweater, the belts – bold in their tone and size) which is what I’d consider to be the defining trait of a good menswear collection – something which treads the line between what is traditionally considered as masculine and that which is resolutely feminine.
